Matthew 14

Devotional:
So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?” (Matt. 14:29b-31).

Impulsive Peter’s step out onto the tumultuous waves brings the almost certain prospect of death by drowning. But amazingly, Peter is able to walk on the water! How? In that moment, his focus is on his trust and belief in Jesus, the Son of God (v. 33) who has complete authority even over the forces of nature. Unfortunately, the moment is fleeting: Peter suddenly begins to doubt, and takes his eyes off Jesus. He becomes terror-stricken at the sight of the wild wind and waves and begins to sink, only to be rescued by his Savior. Now I could go on, but for Pete’s sake — isn’t the message to us here abundantly clear? Let us keep our eyes on Jesus and see what he can do in and through us.
Pray it:
Jesus, I confess it is easy to take my eyes off of you in the midst of the storms that rage in this world. Help me to stay focused upon you and see what amazing and wonderful things happen as I look to you. Amen.
