Matthew 18

Devotional:
Jesus called a little child to him and put the child among them. Then he said, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven. (Matt. 18:2-4).

Don’t you just love the topsy-turvy way God turns the world’s perspectives upside down? Jesus is saying that it’s not the high and mighty and rich and powerful who are greatest in the kingdom — it’s the small and meek, the humble and helpless. The ones who, like children, are completely dependent upon their Father for protection, guidance, and life’s necessities; the weak and vulnerable ones who find safety, shelter, and provision only in their Father’s house. They know full well they have no might or resources of their own upon which they can rely. They place all their trust in the Lord, and in a marvelous twist, become the very ones to whom He entrusts the kingdom. Let us live into this topsy-turvy kingdom.
Pray it:
Father, I confess that I am often prideful rather than humble, trusting in myself and trying to do things on my own. Help me become more like a child and to admire and appreciate the faith of children around me. Amen.
