Matthew 21

Devotional:
Jesus sent two of them on ahead. “Go into the village over there,” he said. “As soon as you enter it, you will see a donkey tied there, with its colt beside it. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone asks what you are doing, just say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will immediately let you take them.” (Matt. 21:1b-3)

It is possible these two disciples paused to ask Jesus the reason for his puzzling instructions, but we sense that they immediately “went and did as Jesus had directed them” (v. 6), no questions asked. We aren’t given the reasons behind God’s orders, but that is alright; as disciples, our job is to obey His orders speedily and without questioning. We can find a reward in the form of surprise and delight if God ultimately discloses the plan we have unwittingly followed: these two disciples were obviously astonished and gratified to learn their part in staging the Triumphal Entry scene prophesied in Zechariah 9:9! May we similarly obey Jesus’s words even when we do not understand them fully.
Pray it:
Father, I confess that I often ask questions instead of obeying your Word. Help me to trust what you say and to follow your directions, discovering and finding the blessings and wonderful things that are found through obeying your Word. Amen.
