Matthew 13

Devotional:
“Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant on the lookout for choice pearls. When he discovered a pearl of great value, he sold everything he owned and bought it! (Matt. 13:45-46)

Although fine pearls are valuable today, they were even more highly prized in Jesus’s time. One can imagine that the merchant in today’s parable considers this one pearl he found to be absolutely flawless, beautiful, and priceless — so much so, that he sells all he has and buys the pearl! Jesus teaches us that if we greatly value something, we will be driven to acquire it — no matter the cost. Friend, if you and I indeed treasure the kingdom of heaven above all else, we will take hold of it, and there is absolutely no cost of discipleship that will seem too high. Is there anything we are valuing more than the kingdom of heaven?
Pray it:
Jesus, you truly are a priceless treasure. Thank you for giving up everything for me. Help me to see your beauty more and more each day so that it becomes easier to give things up because I know I have something better in you. Amen.
