Judges 8

Devotional:
Then the Israelites said to Gideon, “Be our ruler! You and your son and your grandson will be our rulers, for you have rescued us from Midian.” But Gideon replied, “I will not rule over you, nor will my son. The Lord will rule over you! (Judges 8:22-23)

The people of Israel wanted to make Gideon king. Gideon initially refuses and points them to God, but by the end of Judges 8, Gideon himself seems to turn away from God and acts like a king. He named one of his sons, Abimelech, which means, “my father is king.” He created an ephod for himself, a tunic-like garment that was made to be worn by Israel’s High Priest, which Gideon was not. Gideon started out well, but he didn’t finish well. What can we do so we finish well? We read in Hebrews 12:1-2, “Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.” To finish well, we need to keep looking to Jesus. Where are you looking today?
Pray it:
Father, help me to not rest on past actions of faithfulness but rather continue to look to Jesus as long as I live. Uphold and strengthen me by your grace so that I might be faithful throughout the race of life. Amen.
