1 Samuel 25
Devotional:
Thank God for your good sense! Bless you for keeping me from murder and from carrying out vengeance with my own hands. (I Samuel 25:33)
It might be argued that David’s reaction is justified in desiring to kill Nabel and his men. They were bound by a contractual agreement (provision for protection) which Nabel had no qualms breaking. However, without consulting the Lord to fight his battle, David would be marked by unwarranted bloodshed and the stain would mar his rule. Enter the wise wife, as Abigail becomes a mediator to make things right. We, too, have a Great Mediator who is faithful in providing us instruction on doing the better thing. If we heed His wise words and ways (sometimes given through those He places in our paths), there is much promise for our future as well! Stop and take a breath before trying to settle the score on your own. Seek Him first and know He will make it right in His time.

Father, help me to resist the urge to avenge myself and grow in trust in you by letting you be the one who puts things to right. Give the patience and hope that allows me to endure as I wait for that time. Amen.
