1 Samuel 31

Devotional:
Saul groaned to his armor bearer, “Take your sword and kill me before these pagan Philistines come to run me through and taunt and torture me.” (I Samuel 31:4)

This final chapter is the culmination of a life lived cowardly. Saul lived by the sword and died by the sword. Even in his final moments, he fought for control. Death was to be his way and in his time. This was the tragic end of an unsurrendered life. Interestingly the character foil to Saul is the “valiant” man. Valiant isn’t a word often used today. Valiant is the mark of courage and determination. Valiant is doing what’s right, no matter the cost. Whether or not these men agreed with Saul’s politics, they risked their lives to do the honorable, courageous act of bringing dignity to God’s anointed king and his sons. Today, look for opportunities to not only recognize the valiant but to be valiant (Romans 12:10).
Pray it:
Thank you, Jesus, for not doing what was most convenient for you but was best for me by going to the cross for my sins. When I am tempted to take the easy or the cowardly way, help me to remember your great love for me and instead choose the valiant and brave path you took. Amen.
