2 Samuel 13

Devotional:
When King David heard what had happened, he was very angry. (2 Samuel 13:21)

This is a hard chapter to read; God’s Word never softens the severity and depravity of the human condition. What happened to Tamar is heartbreaking and even more disconcerting is the lack of action on the part of her father who had the ability to bring her step-brother to justice. King David was angry but took no action. We don’t know why David did nothing. Maybe it was because his moral failure embodied elements of this horrific crime. Maybe it was because Amnon was next in line to the throne. What we do know is David did nothing! Let us be reminded that when sin grieves and injustice infuriates our hearts, it’s not enough to just embrace the emotion. We are called to action . . . to be doers of the Word and not just hearers (James 1:22).
Pray it:
Father, the sinfulness and injustice that I see in this world breaks my heart, and I know it breaks your heart even more. Help me to be appalled both by the sin around me and the sin within me, and to move from this emotion to action as I seek to put to death sin in my life and promote justice in this broken world. Amen.
