2 Samuel 16

Devotional:
David and his men continued down the road, and Shimei kept pace with them on a nearby hillside, cursing and throwing stones and dirt at David. The king and all who were with him grew weary along the way, so they rested when they reached the Jordan River. (2 Samuel 16:13-14a)

“Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.” Unfortunately, we learn too quickly that this is untrue. Words hurt, sting and destroy. David experienced this. He was the recipient of a slew of slanderous accusations. He could have chosen to fight back, but in wisdom, he allowed the Lord to fight his battles. How are you doing today? Have you been on the receiving end of harsh, unkind, untrue words? Settle in, talk to God, and ask Him to fight your battles. What a great reminder of how our frivolous words can be costly. Let’s choose our words wisely (James 3:5-6) and bring life to those around us.
Pray it:
Father, use the words that come out of my mouth to build up and help others rather than tear them down. May you, through your Spirit, bring healing and provide strength in my heart and soul when the words of others wound me. Amen.
