2 Samuel 19

Devotional:
You seem to love those who hate you and hate those who love you. You have made it clear today that your commanders and troops mean nothing to you. It seems that if Absalom had lived and all of us had died, you would be pleased. Now go out there and congratulate your troops, for I swear by the Lord that if you don’t go out, not a single one of them will remain here tonight. Then you will be worse off than ever before.” (2 Samuel 19:6-7)

It can be so easy to slip into a funk, as our emotions tend to taint reality. David is so focused on his personal loss he doesn’t clearly comprehend the whole picture of what is happening in his kingdom. The equivalent might be the slippery slope of sweatpants, shower-less days, the mindless consumption of Doritos and binge-watching Netflix. We’ve been there. In our pain, sadness and distress, the last thing we desire is to face the world. Joab minces no words with David as he snaps David back into reality and responsibility. There is a time to mourn, but there is also a time to live fully (see Ecclesiastes 3). Be a voice of truth to help others see the bigger picture and listen to the voice of others as well.
Pray it:
Father, help me to both grieve loss well and also to be able to engage the world as you have called me. Give me wisdom to know when the time is to weep and when the time is to act and to help others in this process as well. Amen.
