2 Samuel 21
Devotional:
David asked them, “What can I do for you? How can I make amends so that you will bless the Lord’s people again?” (2 Samuel 21:3)
As we near the end of the book of 2 Samuel, it is important to recognize the remaining chapters are not in chronological order; rather, they serve as an epilogue highlighting various events of David’s reign. Back in the time of Joshua, Israel had sworn an oath to the Gibeonites not to kill them (see Joshua 9:3-17). Saul had broken this oath, and this broken oath caused a three-year famine that had devastating consequences to David’s agricultural society. The famine would cease only when it was atoned for with the bloodshed of seven of Saul’s sons/grandsons. (Seven is a number of completion in the Bible.) Atonement of sin requires a blood sacrifice. Jesus came to be this sacrifice for us so that we would not experience the punishment that we deserve for breaking our oath to God.

Pray it:
Thank you, Jesus, for being the atoning sacrifice for all our sin, for all time. Help me to remember and rejoice in this truth, being assured of the forgiveness of my sin and turning from the sinful tendencies of my heart and temptations of this world through the power of your Spirit. Amen.
