Ecclesiastes 3

Devotional:
What do people really get for all their hard work?... So I concluded there is nothing better than to be happy and enjoy ourselves as long as we can. And people should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of their labor, for these are gifts from God. (Ecclesiastes 3:9, 12-13)

When God created earth, He filled it with good things, including work for Adam and Eve. They were placed on earth to enjoy it and take care of it, but when they sinned, they corrupted themselves and the earth. Work became a burden. Even today, some people avoid work. Ecclesiastes reminds us that work is not bad when we have it in proper perspective, telling us that there is nothing more joyful than to work to do good, serve God and appreciate the beauty of His gifts. At the same time, it reminds us that working apart from God is empty (see 2:18-26). Our purpose is to love God and enjoy Him and all that He has created for eternity. Work may be a struggle for us now, but it is a blessing to serve the Lord.
Pray it:
Father, thank you for the tasks You have set before me to do today and each day. Help me and those around me to view work as something done to honor and glorify You as we await the day in which work will no longer experience the curse of sin. Amen.
