Joshua 20

Devotional:
“Now tell the Israelites to designate the cities of refuge, as I instructed Moses. Anyone who kills another person accidentally and unintentionally can run to one of these cities; they will be places of refuge from relatives seeking revenge for the person who was killed. (Joshua 20:2-3)

God knows that all people have a strong inclination for vengeance. The punishment for murder of any kind was death, and God, though just, was also merciful. God knows that accidents happen, and He knows how dangerous the cycle of revenge can be. These cities of refuge reflect the perfect balance of God’s justice and mercy. Are you quick to judge? Do you display mercy for unintentional hurts? Make space in your heart to give refuge to those the world might judge too quickly.
Pray it:
Father, help me to resist the need for vengeance and instead to trust you for justice. May you also create in me a heart of mercy like yours, showing the same mercy you have on me to those around me. Amen.
