Genesis 14

Devotional:
And Melchizedek, the king of Salem and a priest of God Most High, brought Abram some bread and wine. (Genesis 14:18 NLT)

Other passages in the Bible show us that this reference to the king of Salem is more relevant than we may first think. David is referred to as “priest forever in the order of Melchizedek” (Psalm 110). The writer of Hebrews refers to this passage in explaining who Jesus is (Hebrews 7). Melchizedek was both a king and priest, and he functioned differently as a priest than the Levitical (Old Testament) priests. Jesus is our permanent mediator to the Father, reigning for all eternity. Melchizedek means “king of righteousness” and Salem means “peace. ”We cannot have peace without our King of Righteousness, Jesus. Praise God for our King-Priest, Jesus Christ, and remember that this figure of Melchizedek points to Jesus.
Pray it:
Jesus, thank you for being the king of righteousness and the king of peace. May I find your righteousness and peace in my life, and may my experiences of these gifts point the world to seeing you as the one true King. Amen.
