Deuteronomy 21

Devotional:
“Suppose a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey his father or mother, even though they discipline him. In such a case, the father and mother must take the son to the elders as they hold court at the town gate. The parents must say to the elders, ‘This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious and refuses to obey. He is a glutton and a drunkard.’ (Deuteronomy 21:18-20)

In the Old Testament, a stubborn, rebellious son or daughter was stoned to death by the local village men. The reason? To physically get rid of the evil influence of that person! Because of the cross, we have hope that children gone astray can still come to live a God-inspired life of abundance. This is because Jesus, the obedient Son who never rebelled, went to bore the curse of one hung on a tree (21:22-23). This law about the rebellious son should remind us of our own need to put to death the sin that is in our life and also invite us to pray for those loved ones around us to return to the Lord. Or are you the lost sheep who Jesus is calling to come home today?
Pray it:
Father, I thank you for sending Jesus to suffer in my place as your rebellious child. Help me to remove sin and the influence of sin in my life so that I may look more like your obedient Son and less like my sinful nature. Amen.
