Matthew 19
Devotional:
One day some parents brought their children to Jesus so he could lay his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples scolded the parents for bothering him. But Jesus said, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.” (Matt. 19:13-14).
Wedged in between a very grown-up discussion on the ugly subject of divorce (verses 3-9), and a very grown-up discussion on the ugly subject of idolizing money (verses 16-22), we find this tender and beautiful reprise of yesterday’s lesson. Little children are (for the most part!) simple and pure, humble and innocent; they have not yet become ensnared and ruined by the deceits of the world, the flesh, or the devil. Jesus is (again) teaching us that the hearts and souls of these little ones typify the hearts and souls of heaven’s citizenry. Lord, mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit will continue His very hard work of sanctifying even the most “grown-up” among us.

Pray it:
Father, thank you for the children around me. May you help them know your great love for them and grow them in the grace of our knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. Use me in whatever way you have called me to be a part of that work in their lives. Amen.
