Deuteronomy 10

Devotional:
So you, too, must show love to foreigners, for you yourselves were once foreigners in the land of Egypt (Deuteronomy 10:19).

So far in Deuteronomy, we have seen many calls to love the Lord our God. Here, though, there is a call to “love the resident alien.” I don’t know if you’re like me, but I like to stay with the people I know. It’s less work. It’s easier. But God here, and in many other places in the Bible, calls His people to make room for the stranger, the traveler, the new person, because the reality was that someone made room for us. In doing so, we reflect God’s character as the one who “executes justice for the father and the widow, and loves the resident alien, giving him food and clothing” (10:18). Who can you welcome? Who can you make room for in your community?
Pray it:
Father, help me to remember that the commands you issue are ones that reflect your character and that following them is not just good for me, but makes me more like you. Show me who and how I can welcome others just as you have cared for and welcomed me. Amen.
