Deuteronomy 9

Devotional:
You must recognize that the Lord your God is not giving you this good land because you are good, for you are not—you are a stubborn people (Deuteronomy 9:6).

As they entered the Promised Land, the Israelites could be tempted to think that they were receiving the land because they were better than the other nations. Moses reminds them that this is definitely not the case by pointing out that they are stubborn people who quickly and repeatedly turn to idols even after seeing all that God has done. In fact, the only reason they are still around is because of Moses’s prayers and God’s promises. We too can be tempted to think we are better than others, pointing out the sin of others while ignoring how we stray from God. Rather than exalting ourselves above others, let us exalt God and praise Him for His grace and mercy upon sinful people.
Pray it:
Father, forgive me for my sin, especially the sin of self-righteousness. Help me to view myself and others rightly, through your eyes, and to be like Moses and plead for the salvation of those around me who reject you. Amen.
