Deuteronomy 18

Devotional:
“But you may wonder, ‘How will we know whether or not a prophecy is from the Lord?’ If the prophet speaks in the Lord’s name but his prediction does not happen or come true, you will know that the Lord did not give that message. That prophet has spoken without my authority and need not be feared. (Deuteronomy 18:21-22)

Not every message that someone (including us) says is from God truly if from God. How can we discern what is or isn’t from God? Here are some key principles to use in the process of discerning if something is truly from God:

  1. Does what we heard match God’s Word? (God will never contradict Himself.)
  2. When we ask the Holy Spirit for guidance, what is he saying? (The Holy Spirit has been given as a gift to guide us.)
  3. What do fellow Christians say? (The Holy Spirit dwells in them, too. Using the gift of community allows the Holy Spirit to speak through them into our lives.)

What are you currently wrestling through? What do you need to understand? Ask God to help you use these steps to gain clarity.
Pray it:
Father, I thank you for revealing yourself through the Spirit in your word and your people. Help me carefully discern which messages around me match your word and which ones would lead me astray.

Who is someone you can share a verse or thought from this passage with?

I like the sound of cover to cover ive been out of church for sometime now ive been praying asking God about a church for me to start going to, I want a home church so I can start paying my tithes and offering again, God has been so good to me and I know we're suppose to give God 10% of our earnings God isnt asking for much at all but I believe things will turn around for me more if I start paying tithes and offering thats really been on my heart a lot lately

Thanks for sharing, Dawn! I so appreciate your vulnerability and honesty. We will for sure be praying for you! It's all about the heart, isn't it? Trust and obey. He really is in control and just wants our hearts!
