Matthew 25
Devotional:
To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away. (Matt. 25:29).
“That’s not fair!” we cry. We know God’s topsy-turvy tendencies, but this appears to have gone too far. Is this His idea of an equitable, perfectly-ordered society? Hold on! Jesus isn’t talking about further enriching the wealthy by robbing the poor. Rather, he’s talking about the favor justly granted to the faithful disciple who is a productive steward versus the sentence justly imposed upon the counterfeit disciple who is “evil,” “lazy,” and “good-for-nothing” (v. 26, 30). To the former there will be given a fair and appropriate measure of spiritual responsibility and reward; to the latter there will be, sadly, only “weeping and gnashing of teeth” in “the outer darkness” (v. 30). May this be a challenge and reminder to us to be faithful servants as we wait for Jesus to return.

Pray it:
Father, thank you for the talents you have entrusted me with as I await Jesus’s return. Help me be the servant who uses these things and experiences your joy and keep me from being lazy or wasteful of them. Amen.
