Deuteronomy 14

Devotional:
“You must set aside a tithe of your crops—one-tenth of all the crops you harvest each year (Deuteronomy 14:22).

God commanded the people of Israel to set aside a tenth of what they grew each year and consume it in His presence as a way to remember Him and celebrate His goodness to them. This dedication of a one-tenth of their returns is where the idea of giving God a “tithe” of our income comes from, as a “tithe” is ten percent. Since this command was tied to the ceremonies of worship of Israel, Christians debate whether this principle found in Israel is still applicable to us today. Regardless of whether it is, they provide a wonderful example for us of making sure we don’t spend all of our earnings on ourselves but rather dedicate some of it for the worship of the God who gave it all.
Pray it:
Father, help me to remember that everything I have comes from you. Help me joyfully and willingly reserve some of what you give me to be given back to you in worship and celebration of your goodness. Amen.
