Deuteronomy 17

Devotional:
This regular reading will prevent him from becoming proud and acting as if he is above his fellow citizens. It will also prevent him from turning away from these commands in the smallest way. And it will ensure that he and his descendants will reign for many generations in Israel (Deuteronomy 17:20).

God tells the people that they will want a king and then gives them commands about what this king is not to do (acquire horses and wives) and what he is to do (write the law of God and study it). These commands show that, in contrast to other kings in the ancient world, the king of Israel did not make the law but was to keep God’s law; he was not lord of the land but a servant of the Lord. God gave these instructions because it is easy for those in power to think they are better than others and to use their power to serve themselves and not others. Unfortunately, the kings of Israel broke many of these commands. But the good news is that there is a king who has kept all the laws in our Lord Jesus.
Pray it:
Father, I may not be a king or queen of a country, but I know it is just as important for me to study and read your Word because my heart can grow arrogant. Help me to remember your Word and seek to serve those who are around me rather than build my own kingdom. Amen.
