Deuteronomy 13

Devotional:
Serve only the Lord your God and fear him alone. Obey his commands, listen to his voice, and cling to him (Deuteronomy 13:4).

God reminds the people that the temptation to worship other gods would not just come from the presence of the nations or their old places of worship. It could come from others within Israel, including prophets (13:1-4) and one’s own family (13:5-9). Our allegiance to God needs to be so strong that we are careful to evaluate every message we receive from every person – even those we may trust, love, and respect – to make sure it is true and leading us to follow God rather than worship the gods of time and culture. Not only may we be people of discernment, but also those who encourage others to worship the God who has sent Jesus Christ to save us!
Pray it:
Father, help me not to blindly follow those around me that I love, trust, and respect with the chance that they lead me away from you. Give me eyes to see and ears to hear your truth and the ability to know when things said by others do not correspond to it. Amen.
