Deuteronomy 12

Devotional:
“When you drive out the nations that live there, you must destroy all the places where they worship their gods—high on the mountains, up on the hills, and under every green tree. (Deuteronomy 12:2).

Chapter 12 begins a section that extends through chapter 26 in which God instructs how the people are to live when they enter the land; this shows them what it will look like to love God with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength. It is no coincidence that the first thing God tells them to do is to destroy the places where people had been worshiping idols. He didn’t want His people to worship Him the same way as the other nations worship these idols that are not like Him (and aren’t real!), and He didn’t want His people to be tempted to worship them. We too need to resist the idols that are worshiped in our culture, both refusing to worship them and not letting them compromise our worship of God in the ways that He has chosen.
Pray it:
Father, you are the only true God and the only one worthy of my worship. I confess that I am tempted to direct my worship in places I should not – on people, things, and ideas. Forgive me of my idolatrous ways and lead me through the power of the Holy Spirit to wholeheartedly and exclusively worship. Amen.
