Leviticus 24
Devotional:
Say to the people of Israel: Those who curse their God will be punished for their sin. Anyone who blasphemes the Name of the Lord must be stoned to death by the whole community of Israel. Any native-born Israelite or foreigner among you who blasphemes the Name of the Lord must be put to death. (Leviticus 24:15-16)
If a person in ancient Israel cursed God or blasphemed against Him, they had a hefty price to pay. This is because using the name of the Lord in an inappropriate manner was a direct attack against Him. There are times we may purposefully or unintentionally use the Lord’s name in a similar way. Though stoning is no longer a judgment for such an offense, we need to remember that God is holy and that we are accountable for what we say. “I tell you that on the day of judgment people will have to account for every careless word they speak. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.” (Matthew 12:36-37) May we be wise in the words we use and always uphold the holy name of God in them, repenting and asking for forgiveness when we fall short.

Father, I confess that there are times when I do not treat your name and person with the honor and reverence that you deserve. Thank you for the forgiveness of this sin you offer me through Christ. Help me to treat your name as holy. Amen.
