Proverbs 22

Devotional:
Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it. (Proverbs 22:6).

As every parent knows, children need training, and it is their responsibility to train their children in the way they should go. The Book of Proverbs presents the idea of “the way” as the way of wisdom and life in contrast to the way of folly and destruction. The idea to “start a youth out on his way” is hard to understand, especially for those of us who like a book of rules and regulations. My thoughts go to dedicating to God the child He has given you – to teach and discipline that child as God’s child, remembering that God has entrusted that child to your care. This proverb is a good reminder for parents to examine what way they are pointing their children — is it truly to the way of wisdom, or in our words and deeds, are we actually pointing them in the wrong direction?
Pray it:
God, help me to do my part in leading, training, and guiding the next generation in your Word. I pray for protection over the next generation as they battle the temptations of this culture. Reveal to them your character and allow them to experience and share your love with anyone they encounter. Amen.
