Proverbs 24

Devotional:
And don’t say, “Now I can pay them back for what they’ve done to me! I’ll get even with them!” (Proverbs 24:29)

When we speak against others without cause, the tendency is to exaggerate or bend the truth into something that is more deceptive. This is exactly what wisdom and grace tell us not to do. We should not return evil for evil. Just because someone has spoken evil or told lies about us does not mean that we should speak evil and tell lies about them. Yet, nothing is more natural in our society than to take revenge for wrongs. The world approves it as the right thing to do; in fact, not following through may even be viewed as not having courage to do the right thing. As Christians, we should follow the words of today’s verse and look to the example and teaching of our Savior.
Pray it:
Lord, you have called me to be a vessel of your love, to love my neighbor as myself. Going on a revenge tour or hoping for harm upon those who have wronged me does not fit your description. Help me instead to live like Jesus and love and bless those who oppose me. Amen.
