Numbers 21

Devotional:
Then the people came to Moses and cried out, “We have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you. Pray that the Lord will take away the snakes.” So Moses prayed for the people.

Then the Lord told him, “Make a replica of a poisonous snake and attach it to a pole. All who are bitten will live if they simply look at it!” 9 So Moses made a snake out of bronze and attached it to a pole. Then anyone who was bitten by a snake could look at the bronze snake and be healed! (Numbers 21:7-9).

The complaining about the lack of food and water continues! This time God responds by sending poisonous snakes to bite and kill many of the offenders. It is a physical picture of what sin does — it kills and destroys us. But God once again shows grace and makes a way for them to live by commanding Moses to make a representative image of the snake raised on a pole that the people could look to and live. In John 3:14-15, Jesus refers to this snake in talking about how we must be lifted up on the cross, and all who look to him will live. God hates sin, and the wages of sin is death, but He has made a way to live, if we only look to His Son! Praise God that He has made for us a way out of the punishment for our sins!
Pray it:
Father, thank you for sending your son to us in spite of our continual complaints so that we might live. Help me to keep my eyes focused upon him and remember that he is the way to the precious gift of eternal life. Amen.
