Numbers 22

Devotional:
Then the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the roadway with a drawn sword in his hand. Balaam bowed his head and fell face down on the ground before him. (Numbers 22:31).

Balaam was hired by the enemies of Israel to pronounce a curse upon them. God warned him not to do this because His people were blessed, not cursed (vs. 12). At first, Balaam listened to God and refused to go (vs. 13), but when he was asked again, he agreed – but only to say what God intended for him to say (vs. 14-20). It seems that Balaam is still going for his own gain, though, as God gets angry with him (vs. 22), sending an angel of the Lord to stand against him. Balaam’s donkey recognizes the danger before Balaam does and even tells him about it (vs. 23-30)! Baalam finally sees the danger and commits to truly only say what God intends (vs. 31-40). May we see dangers in our life quickly and turn and follow the ways of the Lord.

Pray it:
Father, help me to discern and see your way and not let desire for pleasure, money, power, prestige, or respect stand in the way of seeing and doing your will. Amen.
