Genesis 23

Devotional:
Then Abraham buried his wife, Sarah, there in Canaan, in the cave of Machpelah, near Mamre (also called Hebron). (Genesis 23:19 NLT)

Abraham was mourning the death of his wife. He knew he needed to bury her, yet they were still sojourning in the land God promised to his descendants. Abraham spoke to the locals and purchased a tomb for Sarah in Canaan, the Promised Land. He made this purchase before God’s promise was fulfilled that he and his descendants would possess this land, showing that he believed this was their new homeland, even though they were currently considered sojourners. What do you view as your homeland? Is your heart here in this land or in your place promised to you from God (Matthew 6:19-21)?
Pray it:
Father, help me remember that my ultimate home is with you in heaven and to walk on this earth in light of this reality. May I be an ambassador for heaven all my days, promoting the purposes and ways of your kingdom and reminding others of the temporary nature of this earth and the certainty of your promises. Amen.
