Genesis 27
Devotional:
Prepare my favorite dish, and bring it here for me to eat. Then I will pronounce the blessing that belongs to you, my firstborn son, before I die.” (Genesis 27:4 NLT)
It was tradition for the oldest son to receive the blessing. Therefore, Esau was to receive the birthright and final blessing of his father; however, he sold his birthright for a bowl of soup. When Isaac and Rebekah’s sons were in the womb, the Lord told Rebekah that the older would serve the younger. Sometimes God challenges tradition. Isaac, not wanting to go against tradition, intended to give the blessing to Esau instead of following the will of God. Did you ever have to let go of a tradition to follow God’s plans? The sin of deception was passed on as Jacob deceived his father to steal Esau’s blessing. Do you ever seek to seize what you want or think you deserve through deception?

Pray it:
Father, help me value the things you value and put them above traditions or natural desires I may have. Give me patience to wait for you to fulfill your promises rather than seek to seize what I think I deserve through my own means. Amen.
