Genesis 11
Devotional:
Then they said, “Come, let’s build a great city for ourselves with a tower that reaches into the sky. This will make us famous and keep us from being scattered all over the world.” (Genesis 11:4 NLT)
The story of the Tower of Babel is a story of mankind’s failure to depend on God. Teamwork wasn’t a sin and being project-oriented wasn’t a sin – the motivation behind their actions was the sin. Pride and self-centeredness motivated the people to action. They wanted to build a tower that would make a name for themselves. Think of what they could have accomplished with that kind of teamwork if their desire was to lift up the name of the Lord. As a church, think of what we could accomplish if we focused on lifting up the name of the Lord. What motives dominate your actions?

Pray it:
Father, help me and help our church not seek to make a name for ourselves but rather to exalt and lift high your name in the earth. Give us an even greater unity than the people of Babel had because of the greater purpose that we have, and let us not be afraid of being scattered and spread out so that people in all places can hear your truth. Amen.
