Genesis 17
Devotional:
What’s more, I am changing your name. It will no longer be Abram. Instead, you will be called Abraham, for you will be the father of many nations. (Genesis 17:5 NLT)
The Lord changed Abram’s name to Abraham so that society would know of the covenant the Lord had made with him. God reaffirmed the promises previously made to Abram (in Genesis12 & 15). Likewise, we are called Christians, bearing Christ’s name, letting society know of the covenant the Lord has made with us. Through Jesus, we have become part of God’s family for all eternity. Do you walk daily aware of your identity in Christ Jesus, or do you revert back to the world’s ways of identifying people through job titles, income status, education degrees, marital status, etc.? As we are tempted to conform to society’s identification standard, remind yourself that your identity is found in Jesus Christ alone.

Pray it:
Father, help me live up to the name of Christ that I bear as one who is called a “Christian.” May this identity transcend any other identity marker I have in this world and may it shape and affect every decision in every area of my life. Amen.
