Genesis 20

Devotional:
Abraham replied, “I thought, ‘This is a godless place. They will want my wife and will kill me to get her.’ And she really is my sister, for we both have the same father, but different mothers. And I married her. (Genesis 20:11-12 NLT)

Here we see Abraham treat his wife like merchandise and hand her over to another man out of fear… again (see Gen. 12:10-20)! When Abraham claimed Sarah to be his sister instead of his wife when they were in Egypt, there is no reference to him praying or showing remorse. However, this time, Abraham goes to God in prayer. In the next chapter, Sarah conceives and bears a son. As commentaries suggest, although Abraham was blessed financially, God’s full blessing did not come upon him until he took his sin to the Lord. He was not acknowledging his role as the protective husband, nor did he value the sanctity of marriage. This story does not condone sin but gives hope for repentance and forgiveness when we do fall into sin. What hope does this give to you?
Pray it:
Father, I confess that I often do not trust your word and act contrary to your commands. Convict me of those places where I have gone astray and assure me of your mercy and forgiveness when I confess my sin before you. Amen.
