Acts 5
Devotional:
The apostles left the high council rejoicing that God had counted them worthy to suffer disgrace for the name of Jesus. And every day, in the Temple and from house to house, they continued to teach and preach this message: “Jesus is the Messiah.” (Acts 5:41-42)
Worthy to suffer. Worthy to suffer dishonor. Worthy to suffer dishonor for the name. Even after being unfairly punished for their witness to Jesus, the apostles did not stop proclaiming the name of Jesus; instead, they taught that Jesus was the Messiah. The predominantly Jewish audience may have believed Jesus was a great man, teacher or prophet, but this bold proclamation of Jesus being the promised Messiah from the Old Testament writings would have shaken even the most dedicated of Judaism (Isaiah 53:5). Do we allow our pride or fear to get in the way of proclaiming that Jesus is our Savior and great Redeemer? Does the thought of suffering or being looked down on by a world that denies Him hurt so badly that we hide our faith?

Pray it:
Father, I confess that I am often afraid of suffering for your name and shrink back in shame rather than in boldness. Forgive me for those moments and remind me of the honor it is to suffer in the name of the one who suffered and rose for me. Amen.
