Leviticus 11

Devotional:
For I, the Lord, am the one who brought you up from the land of Egypt, that I might be your God. Therefore, you must be holy because I am holy. (Leviticus 11:45)

The laws found in Leviticus set forth outward requirements of God’s people that set them apart from the other nations. This chapter in particular lays groundwork for foods the people of Israel can and cannot eat. The New Testament shows that Christians today are not bound by these laws (see Mark 7:19; Acts 10-11, 15). While that may make this passage seem irrelevant to us, it is still useful to teach us about the nature of God and what He expects of us. The reason for these laws is that God’s people are to be set apart and different; we are to be holy, as He is holy. This holiness ultimately doesn’t come from what we do or do not eat, but rather in lives that reflect His purposes and will in this world. Are we living holy lives that reflect our God?
Pray it:
Father, I praise you for being a holy God and for ultimately making me holy through the work of Christ. Guide me by the power of the Holy Spirit to live a life that is holy and reflective of you as I await the day I stand in your holy presence. Amen.
