Numbers 24

Devotional:
I see him, but not here and now.
    I perceive him, but far in the distant future.
A star will rise from Jacob;
    a scepter will emerge from Israel.
It will crush the heads of Moab’s people,
    cracking the skulls of the people of Sheth. (Numbers 24:17).

Much to the chagrin of Balak, Balaam speaks the blessing that God puts in his mouth to the people of Israel two more times. This fourth blessing is also a prophecy, speaking of a king who will conquer many of Israel's adversaries and who looks forward to Jesus, the son of David. Balaam is not a righteous man (not even close), yet God uses him as a mouthpiece to give warning to those who plan to oppose Israel. God can use anyone to convey His message. Just like Balaam, their intentions may not be good, but God can use the situation for His glory or purpose. Sometimes we need to look for and listen to God in unexpected places. We never know whom God will use to speak to us, but when it’s God speaking — we’d better listen!
Pray it:
Father, I thank you for using imperfect messengers and for being able to work in and through anyone. Help me to pay attention to your Word and to seek your glory rather than my own. Amen.
