Matthew 6
Devotional:
“No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money. (Matt. 6:24).
The word “serve” in this verse is the Greek word douleuō, which refers to the work of a slave. In New Testament times, the slave belonged exclusively to the master and, therefore, owed the master undivided loyalty and devotion. In this teaching from the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus is expressing an unavoidable truth: that each of us is, or eventually will be, enslaved to a master exercising exclusive control over our lives. We will either surrender to God and paradoxically find our freedom, or surrender to the world and be forever enslaved to money or whatever other enticement the world uses to bait its trap. In many ways, this is a daily choice that we must make. Whom will you serve today?

Pray it:
Father, I confess that I have often served masters other than you. Thank you for your forgiveness for my failures and strengthen me to serve you only and love you more deeply. Amen.
