Ecclesiastes 1

Devotional:
Sometimes people say, “Here is something new!” But actually it is old; nothing is ever truly new. (Ecclesiastes 1:10)

We hear a lot about changes happening in our world and how rapid such changes seem to occur today. Ecclesiastes reminds us, however, that in the midst of all these changes, nothing really is changing. The sun rises, the wind blows and the river flows. People live and people die and are forgotten by those who follow. These constants cause us to ask the same questions about the meaning and significance of life explored in this book thousands of years later in a much different world. As we read through it, we will discover that when we keep our eyes only upon things on this earth, we find ourselves in a place of despair, but when we lift our eyes to God in heaven, we can find a satisfying answer – one that never changes and does not disappoint because God and His word never change.
Pray it:
Father, without you life on this earth would be devoid of purpose or hope. Help me to live my life in a way that remembers and reflects your reality and your purposes. Amen.
