Numbers 25

Devotional:
In this way, Israel joined in the worship of Baal of Peor, causing the Lord’s anger to blaze against his people. (Numbers 25:3).

After reading about God’s commitment to bless His people in the story of Balaam (Numbers 22-24), we see yet another time when God’s people show a lack of commitment to Him. The people of Israel intermingle with the local women of Moab and Midian and start worshiping their gods. Their sinful choices did what Balaam could not do, as they brought down a curse from God against His people that resulted in 24,000 dying from a plague sent by God. The people of Israel were their own worst enemy, and many times, we are too. Others may strive to knock us down and pull us away from God, but in the end, it is our own sinful choices that do the damage. Pray that God will deliver you from your own sinful choices, and remember His promise to bless us, not curse us — a blessing that includes forgiveness.
Pray it:
Father, I pray these words today that Jesus taught us to pray: “Lead me not into temptation but deliver me from the evil one.” Strengthen my heart to resist and not succumb to the temptations that come my way. Amen.
