Numbers 27

Devotional:
“O Lord, you are the God who gives breath to all creatures. Please appoint a new man as leader for the community. Give them someone who will guide them wherever they go and will lead them into battle, so the community of the Lord will not be like sheep without a shepherd.” (Numbers 27:16-17).

This chapter deals with a couple of loose ends as the people prepare to enter the Promised Land. First, there is provision for a family in which all the sons had died to give the land to the daughters so that this family line might continue (vs. 1-11). Second, God appoints Joshua to take Moses’ place as the leader of God’s people (vs. 12-23) since Moses will not lead the people into the land because of his sin back in Numbers 20. We can see God’s provision in matters that can seem very important (who will lead His people) and some that may seem more trivial (providing for a particular family). In a book in which the people continue questioning God’s goodness, may we see how good He is to His people and ponder His kindness to us in large ways and small ways.

Pray it:
Father, thank you for the way you take care of the big details of this world as well as the small details of my life. Help me to see your hand and your goodness in this world and in my life. Amen.
