Genesis 47

Devotional:
Then Joseph brought in his father, Jacob, and presented him to Pharaoh. And Jacob blessed Pharaoh. “How old are you?” Pharaoh asked him. Jacob replied, “I have traveled this earth for 130 hard years. But my life has been short compared to the lives of my ancestors.” Then Jacob blessed Pharaoh again before leaving his court. (Genesis 47:7-10 NLT)

Jacob and his family are at the mercy of Pharaoh, the powerful ruler; however, Jacob blesses Pharaoh when he enters and exits his presence. Jacob clearly had spiritual authority, but Pharaoh was the earthly, governmental authority. Spiritual authority is different from earthly authority, and Jacob acknowledged and exercised his spiritual authority as a man of God. Jacob honored Pharaoh and honored God through this moment. When was the last time you prayed a blessing on your boss? When was the last time you prayed a blessing on our government leaders, both local and national? It is never too late to start!
Pray it:
Father, help me to heed your call to respect those who are in authority over me, even when they do things that I don’t like or that I disagree with. May the respect and honor I give to these leaders be a sign that I look to one who is greater than them and cause them to wonder about you if they do not already know you. Amen
